The Telfer School of Management invites applications for the Thivierge Chair in Canadian Business, an open rank tenure-track position in Strategy and Organization commencing on July 1, 2024, or earlier.
This Chair was generously created by the Honourable Paul G. Desmarais in honour of Father Edgar Thivierge, one of his professors at uOttawa. The Thivierge Chair is the most prestigious one at the Telfer School of Management and includes a generous compensation package and research funds.
Seeking to continue to strengthen our position in the global research landscape and help build a better Canada and world, the person we are seeking for this role will be a global thought leader with a proven track-record of publications and of training and attracting PhD students. More importantly, we are seeking a candidate with the vision and ability to play a leadership role across the faculty and university in developing a programmatic approach to research and the grand challenges of our time.
The Chair will receive approximately $100,000 per year from endowed funds for the Chairholder to use in pursuit of these objectives. The role description and application details are below.
Title of Position: The Thivierge Chair in Canadian Business. The rank is commensurate with experience.
Terms: Tenure-track position.
Duties: Duties will include in varying proportions: research, teaching, and academic service activities.
Research activities: Applications are invited from candidates with a proven strong capacity in securing competitive research funding, publishing in high quality peer-reviewed journals, and who can maintain lofty standards of excellence with a cutting-edge research agenda in the fields of Strategy and Organization.
Teaching activities include: i) strengthening quality teaching activities; ii) having excellent pedagogical practices and teaching-related scholarly activities; iii) providing an active contribution to increase our graduate programs and interdisciplinarity and iv) supervising graduate students.
Academic service activities: The candidate will have an active role in academic leadership within the Management section. Administrative duties will be agreed upon with the section and the Dean.

Applications must contain: 1) a cover letter, 2) a curriculum vitae, 3) a brief research statement showing alignment of the research program with Telfer’s vision, 4) a brief statement of teaching philosophy, 5) recent teaching evaluation reports, and 6) the names and contact information of three individuals who may be contacted for references.
Education: Ph.D. instrategy, organization theory, management, entrepreneurship, or in a related discipline including sociology.
Language: English and/or French with a strong preference for candidates with the ability to speak and teach in both official languages. At the time of tenure, a minimum passive knowledge of the other official language is required.
Work experience: A high-potential research program as demonstrated by articles published in high-quality and high-impact peer-reviewed journals in Strategy and Organization and related areas. Applicants are expected to demonstrate a track record of success in attracting competitive research funding and an active engagement in the academic community. For consideration of the endowed chair, applicants need to have an outstanding portfolio of publications, and experience training and supervising doctoral students.
Preference will be given to candidates who:
bring an organization theory lens to research and teaching on strategy, sustainability, entrepreneurship/innovation, and/or equity, diversity, and inclusion. Applicants in other sub-disciplines will also be considered. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to advance a cutting-edge, compelling, and impactful research agenda, and are expected to teach courses on strategy at the Ph.D., MSc, MBA and/or undergraduate levels. Experience and willingness to supervise Ph.D. students and contribute to the Strategy and Organization Ph.D. program are necessary for consideration for the endowed chair.
